WE THE UNDERSIGNED approve of and support, in principle, the concept of individual grassroots organizations, political action committees and special interest groups voluntarily working together toward common goals, where appropriate.
We further support, in principle, the concept of such organizations voluntarily cooperating at appropriate times to present a unified organizational front and a collective organizational message on issues of common importance.
We stand fast, however, on the fundamental right of each individual, organization and coalition in our movement to speak for him, her or itself with his, her or its own voice, unencumbered by messages delivered, explicitly or implicitly, on their behalf. We support the right of each individual and group to communicate for themselves, unburdened by unified messages or common narratives with which they may not agree, or on a subject about which they have not freely elected to speak out. Under such circumstances, silence cannot be interpreted as consent.
We the undersigned reiterate again, unequivocally and in no uncertain terms, that there is no 'Tea Party Leader,' and no 'Tea Party Spokesperson.' Each member is his or her own leader, and his or her own spokesperson. Every person who holds dear our Constitutionally-protected principles of limited government is a tea party leader. Any person or organization purporting to speak for the 'Tea Party Movement' is an impostor speaking without legitimate authority.
Anyone who desires to know what motivates a tea party member must listen to the answer directly from each of us. We each have our own voice and we will continue to use them.
To the extent that any coalition or federation is formed to advance the principles of limited government, individual liberty and constitutional governance, we applaud their efforts. We must make clear, however, that any such group speaks for itself, and only for itself, and we encourage any and all such groups to consistently reinforce that fact in their communications with the public.
